Shaftesbury Avenue, London - Michael Lawes (b1948)

Original pastel drawing. Signed and dated '01 lower right. Framed & glazed, Measures 66cm x 45cms. Condition: Excellent, some pastel powder has settled between the mount and the glass at the bottom.

This vibrant rainy nightime pastel of Shaftesbury Avenue has been superbly executed. Shaftesbury Avenue is in the heart of the London's West End Theatre district and the view point is from the Piccadilly Circus end looking North East towards the Lyric, Apollo and Guilgud Theatres. The scene is unmistakable London with its regency architecture, Routemaster buses and red phone box. (and bad weather).

Michael Lawes studied at Birmingham College of Arts and Design. He has been a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and also of Birmingham Pastel Society. His work has appeared in numerous magazine articles and books, including the front cover of the Artists and Illustrators Magazine June 2006 and is on the front cover of the Pastel Artist's Bible published by Search Press.

ITV Central News has made a short film of his paintings of Birmingham. He has exhibited in galleries in London and throughout the country.
