Magic Lantern Slide. From an archive of slides from the Publicity Department of London Underground. Date: circa 1947. Measures 8.3cm x 8.3cm. Excellent Condition.

This incredibly detailed slide shows a monochrome version of the London Underground map of 1947, designed by HC Beck. This specific map was the designed as the large platform maps (printed in Quad Royal and Quad Foolscap formats) and carries the decorative border by Captain Thomas ‘Shep’ Shepherd. This edition of the map shows the Northern Heights extensions which were delayed by WWII and eventually cancelled in 1950.

The slide only measures 8cm across yet the text is crisp and readable, even HC Beck’s name in the bottom right corner. This is a direct black and white copy of the full colour map, subtle differences in tone can be seen between the lines.
