The London production of Les Miserables by Cameron Mackintosh and the Royal Shakespeare Company opened at the Barbican Theatre, London in September 1985. After just two months, the show moved to the Palace Theatre and then the Sondheim Theatre becoming a global sensation and the longest-running musical in the West End.
This is the first poster produced for the Palace Theatre production in late 1985 followings it move from Barbican Theatre and still carries the RSC logo top right which didn't appear on later posters.
The striking artwork by Dewynters is an adaptation of the original book cover illustration by Emile Bayard and combines with the distinctive 'Caston Antique' typeface to create was has become one of the most recognisable and iconic visuals of the 20th Century.
