New York City Transit Authority - Map and Station Guide (1964)

Issued by New York Transit Authority. Dated 1964. Colour lithograph on paper. Measures 101cm x 83cm (40” x 32.5”). Condition: Overall very good with some minor edge tears and pin holes in the corner.

Whilst pocket maps of the New York Subway were issued in the millions, large format platform maps were printed in significantly lower numbers with most being discarded when a new version was issued to stations. This rare example is in superb condition and features and blue overprint for the 1964 World’s Fair at Shea Stadium, Flushing.

Inspired by Harry Beck and his geometric treatment of the London Underground, George Salomon presented a speculative report to the NYCTA in 1957 with the intriguing title ‘Out of the Labyrinth’. The report set out a new approach to map the New York Subway which many had struggled to coherently present the complex network to passengers on the move. His first map was issued in 1958 and saw significant distortion and simplification of the lines and physical features of the city. Salomon’s design would go on to inspire later designers of the Subway map such as Massimo Vignelli.
