This evocative 100-year-old London Underground poster for Kew Gardens would have been displayed on platforms, walkways, ticket halls and entrances across the network. With a print run of just 1000, most of these decorative posters would have been discarded or pasted over and therefore very few have survived. Indeed this is the only known example in existence.
Sheringham’s artwork features three early 19th century ladies sat amongst flowers, while in the background, suitors take romantic walks in the idyllic surroundings of trees, pagodas and a river. Beneath Sheringham’s illustration sits a poem credited to M.E.P that invites visitors to Kew “for spring has blossomed there”.
Founded in 1840, Kew Gardens is a botanic garden in southwest London that houses the largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collections in the world. The District Railway reached Kew in 1877 which led to a significant increase in visitors making it one of the most popular outdoor destinations in London.
George Sheridan was a British painter and theatre designer. One of the first recipients of the Royal Designers for Industry distinction in 1937 he worked briefly with Frank Pick, Chief Executive of the Underground Electric Railways of London Ltd over a two year period, producing 13 posters, all relating to outdoor leisure activities accessible by public transport.
