Tiffany & Co Magnifier Lens - Picasso Exhibition New York (1939)

£695.00

Tiffany and Co. New York Art Gallery - Picasso Nr. 72/100

Created by Tiffany & Co Ltd. 1939. Numbered '72/100' Glass lens with embossed brass surround. Measures 6cm x 1cm. Condition: Excellent. Some wear to edges. Small scratch on one side of the glass. Some tarnishing present on brass.

Just 100 of these beautiful magnifiers (each numbered) were produced by Tiffany and Co. New York - presented to special guests at the opening of "Picasso: Forty Years of His Art” at the Museum of Modern Art. Guests were encouraged to use the lenses to gain an appreciation for the artistic process at a brushstroke level. It's exciting to think who might have originally owned this, perhaps one of the big movie stars or musicians of the age.

The ground-breaking 1939 exhibition “Picasso: Forty Years of His Art” at the Museum of Modern Art was a great turning point in twentieth-century art history. While war raged in Europe, it travelled to museums in Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Kansas City, New Orleans, San Francisco, and many other cities, forever changing how Americans thought about modern art.
