The First Frisbee - Frisbie Pie Tin (1920's)
Original Frisbie's Pies tin c1920’s. Large letter / 5 hole variant. Produced by Frisbie Pie Company (Connecticut, US). 25cm x 25cm x 2.3cm. Condition: Very good with nice patina.
William Russell founded the Frisbie Pie Company in Bridgport Connecticut in 1871. However, It was around the corner at Yale University, a major consumer of Frisbie's Pies, that the aerodynamic qualities of the pie tin was discovered and the past time of Frisbie-ing was born! Two Yale Students who observed this phenomenom, Richard Knerr and Arthur Melin, co-founded Wham-o and in 1957 produced the first Frisbee (respelt to avoid trademark issues). Over 300 Million Frisbees have been sold worldwide. The Frisbee (or Disc, if not Wham-o) has inspired an array of 'disc sports' including Ultimate and Disc Golf, being played across the world at the highest level of competition.
A Frisbie Pie Tin was featured in Back to The Future Part 3 (1987); Marty Mcfly throws one at Biff Buchanans gun and saves Doc's life.
